MIDNIGHT MUSES

2020-09-11

Poetry has always been something that I either loved or hated. Something I loved when I didn't have to analyze every stanza and find the hidden meaning between the words, and something I hated when my teachers insisted that the meaning of human existence could be found in lyrical lines. Midnight Muses never had to balance on that love-and-hate line. From the monent I read the first poem, I knew that I was only going to love every part of that book.

So, let's just dive into the interview with:

1) When did you first get into poetry?

I got into poetry two or three years ago. I think reading prose from books I've read before has always attracted my attention. There's a beautiful rawness to all things, and poetry has a way of capturing it. I thought, "I want to write that."

2) What's your favorite poem off your poetry book?

It's hard to pick which one is my favorite, especially since I tend to be picky and critical with my writing, but each piece means a lot to me. Right now, I like "Icarus Boy". It reminds me that some things, no matter how alluring they can be, can lead to tragedy.

3) Where do you usually get your inspiration from?

I get inspired by everything. From nature, to film, to the books and stories I read can leave me stunned. It draws out many emotions and keeps me motivated to continue writing. Analyzing pieces and learning from them, especially those that mean a lot to me, also inspire me.

4) Do you prefer writing poetry or literature?

I think it depends on my mood. When I want to capture emotion in all its rawness, I find poetry easier to do so. But I enjoy writing literature as it lets me, personally, explore many topics in depth. I think it's different preferences at different times.

5) Which is your favorite character from Queen of Thieves? And why?

(Queen of Thieves is a fantasy/action novel that has been now removed from wattpad for editing reasons, but will come back)

My favorite character always changes. Right now, looking back at everything, I'd say that August is my favorite. He has a tough exterior, but is gentle within. His emotions are messy and complex and he still has so much to figure out, especially about his past. He reminds me that beneath every facade, there's a vulnerable rawness that we call humanity. Plus, he's devoted to Claire because she represents, in his eyes, what he's lacking, and I find that very interesting about his character which makes him fun to write.

ICARUS BOY

he heard whispers of dreams of redamancy dance in the wind, the gentle breeze kissing him until tulips erupted in his veins. suddenly, like embers turning into a blazing fire, the wind howled and lashed at his face.

he began to cry tears of diamond, each drop of salty water a reminder of nostalgic nights and the murmurs of quiet mornings.

the wind tore him apart- peeled off marigolds for skin and left rose muscles vulnerable. his tears turned into coal, tulip blood into obsidian, and his marigold skin fell onto the soft ground. however, one petal danced in the howls of the untamed skies and flew.

now, he was flying. soaring like the single petal, bliss erupted in his body like tulips. his dark lips turned into a smile and he laughed. the rose muscles covered a lavender heart, keeping it safe. keeping it beating.

now, he was falling. falling like marigolds. falling like icarus. falling like an angel whose wings have been snipped off and now spiraled into darkness. into madness.

he raised his arm, his hand. what was he reaching for? what was he looking for?

the melancholic skies?

the clouds in hopes they'd cushion his fall?

a savior?

oh, he was not icarus, but an icarus boy.

he fell from the heavens because he listened to the wind. he soared through gloomy skies because he trusted the petal. he fell from the clouds because the wings that once carried him were cut off.

oh, icarus boy, why did you follow the wind?

oh, icarus boy, if only someone were there to hold your hand.

oh, icarus boy, if only someone saved you.

if only you saved yourself.
